CIULEANDRA

(Roumanie)

Foaie verde siminoc
Ţineţi Ciuleandra pe loc.
Feuille verte de siminoc (une plante),
Danse la Ciuleandra sur place.
Green leaf of siminoc,
Keep the circle in place.

Şi-nc-odată mai băieţi,
Hop-ş-aşa-ş-aşa
Encore une fois les amis,
Sautez comme ceci et comme cela.
One more time, boys,
Hop-and-so-and so.

Ţineţi-o flăcăi aşa,
Pînă n-ajunge puica,
Hé vous les gars, dansez comme ceci,
Jusqu'à ce que mon amie l'apprenne.
Keep it like that, lads,
Until my darling catches up to me.
Întătişţi-o niţeluş
C-ajunge acuş-acuş,
Joue la encore un peu plus vite,
Parce qu'elle est trop loin de moi.
Strenghen it (fasten it) just a little,
She ("puica") is close to catch up with me.
Mai intăriţi-o de-un pas
C-ajuns şi n-a rămas
Joue encore, un autre pas
Elle l'apprend et poursuit.
Fasten it one more step,
She caught me up, but didn't stay.
Două fire, două paie,
Luaţi Ciuleandra la bătaie
2 grands pas, 2 pas sur place,
Joue la Ciuleandra le plus rapidement possible.
2 straws, 2 grains,
Let's stomp* the Ciuleandra.
Tot aşa că nu şă las,
Că sînt cu puica pe-un pas,
Joue la ainsi, je n'abandonnerai pas,
Je suis près de mon amie.
Keep it like that, don't let it down,
Cause I'm on same step with my darling.
Două firem două paie,
Ia Ciuleandra la bătaie.
2 grands pas, 2 pas sur place,
Joue la Ciuleandra le plus rapidement possible.
2 straws, 2 grains,
Let's stomp* the Ciuleandra.

Siminoc : Everlasting flower, xeranthemum.
The name of the flower is not essential; "foaie verde de..." is the usual starting verse of Romanian folk songs, the flower or tree varying from song to song for rhyming purposes.
Puica, puico = my darling (fem.). Means, in the initial sense, pullet, female chicken; it does not, however, have the negative connotations that its American exact translation has; it is also used in its masculine form puiule = my darling.
Let's stomps* the Ciuleandra : A more exact translation than stomlp would be beat up, in Romanian the same verbal form is used to describe the action against a person.
